In his book "Never Split the Difference," former FBI hostage negotiator Chris Voss says the magic words to hear in any negotiation are... drum roll please... "That's right!"
Typically, when we pitch
an idea at work or attempt to persuade someone during a disagreement we long to hear the words, "You're right!"
But as Voss points out, when someone says "you're right" it can feel as though it's a win/loss situation. Someone had to concede that you are right which means they were wrong, and no one wants to be wrong! Or they might be saying "you're right" just to
get you to stop talking!
You being right isn't what matters, it should be about finding out what's right. And when someone says "that's right" it means they have reached the same conclusion as you, they have internalized it as being right, and they now own it as much as you do. So, don't make your case about whether you are right or wrong,
make the conversation about the objective facts and the pursuit of the truth that you can both agree upon.
